Today I want you to study what makes people different. I sometimes use people I have met or seen as characters in my book. All people are different even if they come from similar backgrounds. I'm currently teaching at an alternative school in Essex County. Most kids are absent a lot but there are a few that come to school every day. Lots of the kids curse and even have cursed me out on occasion but there are a few students who never have; some take drugs and one or two never would.
All these kids come from the same community but still their stories are different. I even have one student who dresses preppy and never "sags" while most of the boys in the school sags so low I can see all over their boxers or briefs. It's not a pretty site- ugh! So what are the people around you like? Pick out four people and jot down notes about them. Remember that when you are writing a book, you should make your characters behave and sound different. Have fun with this exercise and remember to keep writing!
