I'm sure you've all heard your teachers saying that the best way to become a great writer is by reading the works of other great writers. But when people say this, the question is, what books should you read if you want to learn from the best? Francine Prose feels that Jane Austin is a good writer to read if you want to learn how to write dialogue.
One writer that I feel should be added to her list especially for young writers is JK Rowlings. The Harry Potter series is great too because Rowlings really knows how to create intriguing subplots that add debt to the story. The Things They Carried by Tim O'Bien is also on Prose's list; I have to say this book made it on my list too and coincidentally this book made it on the list of a teenage writer who took my screenwriting class last year. Hemingway, Chekvo, Kafka, Fitzgerald, Twain, and Dickens also on her list. So check on some of these writers and add a few of your own like Morrison, Mosely and Amy Tan. It's never good to just read the writing of one ethnic group. Great writers come in all genders and races.
