Review of The Gathering by Kelley Armstrong

The Gathering is a novel about a 16 year old girl named Maya Delaney who lives in Salmon Creek, a small town on Vancouver Island in Canada.  Everyone in her town works for the St. Cloud family's medical research company and they've vowed to protect the town's secrets from industrial spies and strangers who visit the town.  Living in Salmon Creek has its benefits.  Everyone gets world class doctors to cater to their all medical needs and the children of the employees get a world class education.

At the start of the novel Maya's best friend Serena drowns in the lake while Maya and Serena are hanging out.  The only problem is Serena shouldn't have drowned.  Serena was a champion swimmer and was in perfect medical condition.  Maya's best friend and Serena's boyfriend Daniel are haunted by her death.

A "reporter" comes into town and starts asking questions about the children.  Soon Maya starts to suspect there is more to the special powers she has to heal animals and the medical treatment the children receive from the doctors in town.  Maya meets Rafe and his sister Annie, strangers who have moved to town but don't work for the research company.  Soon Maya finds herself falling for Rafe.

On her sixteen birthday Maya goes into town to get a tattoo and soon discovers that there may be more to her healing powers than she expected.  The reporter dies mysteriously murder  just as she's about to give Maya information. Maya discovers Rafe secrets about himself and her past. As Maya comes closer to the truth a fire is lit by unknown intruders in hopes of covering up something.  Maya, Rafe and her friend Daniel set out to discover the truth. This is a great book.  Armstrong includes Native American folklore in an interesting and exciting way.
