The Hunger Games is the story of Katniss Everdeen, a teenager who lives in Panem, a country that was once called North America. Panem is made up of twelve districts that surround The Capital, a place where all the wealthy citizens and government officials live. Everyone else in the surrounding districts is extremely poor.
The citizens rebel against the Capital because of the Capital's unfair treatment of the citizens in the surrounding districts. The Capital destroys District 13 and creates the Hunger Games to punish its citizens. In the Hunger Games a boy and a girl from ages 12 to 18 from each district is chosen to fight to the death as "tributes" on national television. When Katniss's sister is chosen she decides to take her place and eventually ends up fighting in the games.
During the games Katniss teams up with Peeta, a boy from her district who once saved her family from starvation and one by one the tributes are killed as the nation watches the games on television. Without giving away the entire book the Hunger Games is an exciting novel with lots of twists, turns, cool girls fighting and even a little romance thrown in for good measure.
Read the book before the movie comes out. There's no way "Hollywood" will be able to create the "world" of this novel and depict the fighting scenes without going over the top or toning things down because of ratings.
