This exercise is one that Francine Prose gave to her literature class and now when I hear people having conversations I think about what they are really saying to each other.
Pick two strangers and listen to their conversation. What are they talking about? Do you detect any subtext or underlined meaning in what they are saying to each other? Sometimes a simple statement means so much more. Give it a try and see what's happen. Often you'll discover that when people speak they are often saying one thing but meaning another.
