Always Running by Luis J. Rodriguez is a novel about gang life in East LA. The book is a memoir and begins with Luis chasing his son who has also joined a gang. The book portrays the brutal life young men who have joined gangs. It's filled with lots of violence, heartache and honestly portrays the horror of street life. Although the protagonist of the book is a young book this I added this book to my list because I don't think anyone should refuse to read a book just because the protagonist is male.
This book describes real accounts of how young boys are forced to join gangs from an early age. It depicts the struggles Luis endures as he eventually tries to leave gang life behind after he finds himself drawn to poetry and writing, after living most of his teen years as a gang member who's witnessed friend after friend die. It's a very gripping story or gang life and survival.
